Agreed. I think we could kill off a lot of the grumbling simply by adding more options on build/features on the existing models of humans.

Some warriors could be hulks like Conan, while others are smaller and more compact(almost dwarflike). height, skin, facial etc... are a good start( we could use more!), but different muscle build options are a good idea as well, IMHO.

More variety in form and apperance is needed.

this is not a race-and-class game. this is a class-based game. if you want drow rangers, play D&D. if you want to play a half-dragon zombie faerie sorceror, play D&D. If you want to play an anthropomorphic catgirl, go play S.P.A.N.C. or watch some anime.

this game is more like M:tG than it is D&D.

i feel stupider having had to even answer this question. the answer should be obvious.

OR we could have two-sided war going on between two factions... lets call them the Luxon and the Kurzick...

Elves-no,can we leave it at that? Also,as we have already seen Anet does a pretty good job coming up with their own original races. (Tengu, the Forgotten,Mursaat, etc.) So let's leave the races and species to them and see how it goes without our intervention on the concept.

Wait a minute? Don't we have multiple different races we can play already? We have many different options for skin colors, facial features, and hair colors. So we really do have different races we are able to make our characters. I think ANet has given us races, but what people are looking for is different species of player models. Of course I am sure everyone knows this.

***Note the above was meant to be harmless sarcasm, I just seen an opportunity and ran with it.***

As for the idea this thread is based upon, I do not think we really can complain about what we do have. Such as free online play. Adding new species of player characters would take a lot of work, such as new armor, weapons, focii, and animations. Not to mention all of the changes ANet makes has to be approved by NCSoft. I'm sure NCSoft has "bigger fish to fry" so to speak, with their games they are charging monthly fees for. While I would not personally object to new playable species, I would see new species best implemented as a purely cosmetic feature. Ideally, what I would rather see in lieu of new species, is better character customization, such as body size (i.e. fat, skinny, in-between), and eye colors. I would also like to see something along the lines of an RGB slider for customized colors, even after character creation (I hate the current, and confusing dye system). Finally, I would like to be able to change my character's features in-game (the same hair style gets old after a while).

Surely some of my proposed alternatives will never happen. However, the dreams and desires are always going to be there by more people than just myself. Everything I have mentioned here is purely my own personal opinion, and I do value constructive criticism.

Anet hinted that races could come down the road but I doubt it will be with Campaign 3.

Ok, I have an idea. I too would like to see some new races, but when they say that it would be tough to implement, I have to agree. Anet would have to write a new backstory for each new race, and the artistic stuff would be pretty tough.

Thus, my idea. What if we had more advanced character creation, like adarby said, we need better customization. We all know that these new races couldn't possibly have new racial bonuses, that would un-balance the game. Therefore, the changes would be purely cosmetic. Instead of creating new races, you could just edit you human character with the character editor so that it looks like an elf, or dwarf, or half-dragon kitsune pig-man thing. It would stop alot of the gripe when it comes to existing character, and allow people to create there own "races." I also like the idea of a RGB slider, so we could go crazy and make like hot pink characters.

Discuss.

i agree, anet did a good job comin upo wit they own race ideas. if they gunna make new playable races, they shudn't be the generic races that are in EVERY SINGLE OTHER RPG. ex. elves are in: every LotR game, WoW, morrowind, oblivion, D&D, baldurs gate, warhammer (yes, there is a warhammer rpg comin out) just to name a few. think about it like starwars, he drew up completely new ideas, so if anet gunna make more, let them be creative, and hopefully the wont f**k it up........

Agree. No same old generic races. It will be repeatitive if they create Tolkien races as playable

Tengus, they nearly already started a backstory with factions for them.

No boni/mal for other races, it would just screw up gamebalance and/or create the, warrior must be a dwarf, thingie

Based on interviews and from what i've heard there will probably be another race within the next two chapters. Probably nothing that exist now though, something new.

I think (and hope) that a Bard like profession will be in the next chapter, as some people have seen concept art of floating around.

I remember hearing Jeff Strain use "Lizardmen" as an example.

I would like to point your attention to another great game... Diablo/Diablo 2(lets include LoD)

In Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, there were 7 classes and only one race. Heck, you didn't even get to pick your character's gender.

But you know what? It was still a lot of fun.

I reckon the reason you can't play other races is because it would suck TBH

Ok, IMO races are a great idea. Theyve already got plenty of different races, they just are playable, so theres no reason you shouldnt be able to play as some of them.

To impliment them: I think they should make a chapter that sort of goes back to every past chapter and adds areas to them and high level content. If they would do this, with say... Chap. 4, then you could add races there.

Every continent gets humans of course. For the Tyrian race, it should be dwarves IMO. They start in pre-sear just as humans, and their backstory would be like this: You and a bunch of other dwarves and dwarven ambassadors came to Ascalon to trade and establish better relations with these human neighbors, as wlel as to get help vs the Stone Summit. Its a very simple idea and all they would have to change is the first cutscene. Dwarves would only be able to start as a Tyrian character (so you wouldnt be able to start a Dwarven Assassin in Cantha, as that would be quite silly).

For Cantha, the race could be Tengu. Backstory: The recent peace between the Tengu and Canthan Empire has given cause to the Shing Jea Monastery to allow the training of the Tengu in their ways of fighting. The Luxons/Kurzicks allow you to fight for them (despite their prejudices) because you hate the other faction as much as they do. And again, you couldnt start a Tengu in Ascalon, even if you have both chapters.

Adding these races would give you a reason to go back and do all the old content, and Im sure in the future it would help sell the old games as well. Even though they can only start in certain chapters, they can carry on to others once they reach the traveling point (LA or The Marketplace).

Races would be purely aestictic btw.

What do you think?
